The Gayer Anderson museum in Cairo and the echo of a cretan custom

In Cairo near the great Mosque of Ibn Tulun is an old house that now serves as a museum: the Gayer-Anderson Museum, or the home of Cretan woman. The museum consists of two houses. The largest house, located in the east was built in 1632. Later, came into the possession of a wealthy Muslim woman from Crete, and became known as Beit Al-Kritliyya, or "House of the Cretan woman"
A number of legends are associated with the Beit Al-Kritliyya:

According to one legend the well of the house has miraculous properties - for example, someone in love who looks to the water will see through, his-her favorite person and not his-her idol(not himself).

We have not more information about this Cretan woman who was converted to Islam. But in this story about the favorite person that can be seen in the waters of the well by his beloved one is reflected a Cretan tradition probably carried by this woman or the related with her women from Crete. Is a Cretan ritual that takes place during the day of Klidonas(the day of Saint John in 24 of June. The day of fires). Until recently, the girls of the villages in the day of Klidonas used to go during midday to the wells, they were putting a red scarf on their heads, were thrown into the well the silent water (water from the fountains, that carried during previous midnight without speaking) and then were lying upside down so that their heads to protrud. They were taken a mirror and were looking at the shapes made by the turbulent waters in order to see their beloved person. It seems that the Cretan owner or the women of her company some centuries ago certainly carried in Cairo this Cretan tradition and it's memory has been maintained with her name. Is known that all the converters to islam didn’t forget their customs and greek language. Until today the so called turkocretans who were settled in the costs of Asia Minor keep their greek language and greek customs
